Sinuses are air-filled cavities within the face that have the potential to cause pressure and headaches when they become inflamed. Sinus pressure will cause sinus headaches most commonly in the sinuses above or below the eyes, but may affect any sinus. Patients will typically note increased symptoms with congestion, allergies, and barometric changes.
Treatments are directed towards the particular etiology causing the problem. Allergies may be treated with antihistamines or nasal steroids. Barometric changes causing sinus pressure may be improved with decongestants. Sinus infections are resolved with antibiotics.
Some patients have anatomically narrowed sinus drainage pathways. Balloon Sinuplasty is an innovative sinus treatment technique to improve sinus drainage. By using a small balloon to dilate the natural sinus drainage pathways in a simple clinic procedure, sinus pressure can be alleviated. Studies have shown excellent long-term results in resolution of patient’s sinus complaints as well as sinus related headaches.
